After a highly successful seminar in Scotland Sean from The Good Dog and myself had a bunch of private 1/1 sessions. This is a few minutes from one of them. 3 highly reactive dogs who have been like this for quite some time and any dog that came into view the reaction was out of control behavior.
So the first thing I did was to eliminate the arousal, this is something that many folks are just not doing, they are trying to train a dog that is highly aroused, reactive, adrenalized (you can call it what you want). So the first step is to eliminate the arousal and then teach the dog.
I used a bonker, which is a wrapped up towel secured with 2 rubber bands, you use it as a punisher. So you say NO, wait 1-2 seconds and then throw it at the dog, yes at the dogs head. It is a towel it is not going to harm a dog at all.
This has 2 purposes, it stops the unwanted behavior immediately and also it creates an inhibition to it continuing. Which is what a proper punishment is supposed to do. So then we work on the walk. I am not working on the perfect heel, or the exact leash handling skills. I just want this person for the first time ever to be able to walk her dogs politely down the street.
